Fashion in the now

I recently went out for a family dinner with my mom, auntie, and grandmother, and was surprised by the way each of them not-so-subtly checked out my outfit. I wondered briefly whether they had been possessed by the spirit of a leering teenaged boy, but it turned out that they were taking in what I was wearing for entirely different reasons.

“If only I’d kept all of my eighties jeans,” said my mother, her eyes on my skinny jeans.

“And that seventies jacket with the woolen cuffs,” said my auntie, hungrily eyeing my coat.

My grandmother’s attention was on my necklace, which was a long, thin chain studded with balls of beaten bronze. “Is that your great-grandmother’s?” she asked. It was—it was one of several pieces that I’d dug out of my great-grandmother’s old jewelry and trinket box about a decade ago. The box had been full of wonderful costume jewelry pieces, all of them over the top and perfect for wearing with the current fashions. I found myself hoping that she wouldn’t ask me to return it.

We’re living in a great time for fashion—a time where everything is simultaneously in style. Today’s designers are borrowing from those of the past, from every era imaginable, and they’re picking and choosing all of the best bits for us to wear. Rather than being limited to a particular style, such as tailored two-piece skirt and shirt ensembles, or cinched in dresses, or uber-long flares and platforms, today’s style is creative and daring, and lets you mix and match like a Subway sandwich.

So have fun finding a variety of different pieces drawing on different styles and eras that you love, and wear them proudly in whatever combination pleases you. If you dress to your own sense of style, it’s difficult to go wrong with today’s fashions.
