5 Reasons To Include Fruit and Vegetables In Your Diet


We all know that fruits and vegetables are healthy and that we should eat them every day, but why are they healthy? Our mothers have always reminded us (read: forced us) to eat our vegetables. In school it seemed that secondary school jobs were built around telling us that fruits and vegetables are healthy. But rarely are we told why they are healthy. Here are five reasons why you should include fruits and vegetables in your every day diet.

1. Reduce the chances of heart disease and stroke. The power of fruits and vegetables will help you reduce the chances of a fatal stroke or heart disease. They protect your body from free radicals which can clog your arteries which will allow cholesterol to build up.

2. Helps prevent cancer. The fact that fruits and vegetables have plenty of vitamins, minerals, and fibre, the chances of getting cancer is lessened by eating a decent serving of fruits and vegetables every day. Antioxidant agents such as Vitamin A, E, and C help protect your body from free radicals, which are very unstable.

3. They contain natural sugars. Fruits and vegetables do not just prevent diseases, but also give your body much needed natural sugars which function to give you a natural buzz to give you that much needed energy midday. Instead of reaching for a chocolate or a Coke when you’re sluggish, try reaching for a nice juicy fruit instead.

4. They are great breakfast foods. For many, a quick cup of coffee or tea is all they have for breakfast; our frantic lifestyle prevents anything else. But try grabbing a banana or a cucumber on your way out the door. They can be eaten as you drive and give you a more substantial amount of energy than coffee or tea.

5. Low calories. Not only are they a delicious source of energy, but they are also low in calories. What else do you want from a snack? Low in calories and delicious.
