Ga-ga for Gaga

If you're on this blog then chances are you already know (and probably love!) Lady Gaga's style. 10 inch high shoes, outrageous outfits, glass headpieces, and the make-up and hair that's always part of her overall look. The lot. Now Lady Gaga has a team of stylists, prop-makers, hairdressers and make-up artists to ensure she always looks 100% Gaga, but sadly neither you nor I have this team on hand when getting dressed up. Who knows where she gets her ideas from, but if I knew where Gaga's creativity fuel storage facility was, I'd be in there sneaking a drop.

Luckily a lot of Gaga’s gorgeous looks lend themselves to being recreated at home, whether in their entirity or as inspiration for your own projects. In later posts I’ll be looking at creating your own DIY Gaga-esque outfits and shoes, but today let’s look at headwear.

Now, you could just pin empty soft drink cans into your hair as rudimentary curlers (and that’s a good start) but there’s a whole world of outrageous fashion choices waiting for you once you let your imagination go. Let’s start with Lady Gaga’s most iconic titfers. Her head has worn ice shards, a telephone, a lobster, bubbles, horns, numerous wigs, hair bows, crowns, bunny ears, cages...

These might not be looks you wear everyday (or generally even in the day!) but getting dressed up for an evening should always be this much fun.

I was lucky enough in the summer to see the amazing hairdressing/performing duo Osadia (above) who specialise in transforming audience members at festivals into flamboyant characters with creative use of hair spray, spray dye, and all manner of props.

They were ideal inspiration for Gaga-influenced DIY. Their make-up extended up into the hair as they used spray colour, stencils and hairspray to create wild shapes, then wired on props like plastic rockets, giant fake flowers, minature animals and toys to complete the look. You might not be able to get a full-sized plastic lobster like Gaga, but if you head to the poundshop and the toystore you’ll be able to find all kinds of things begging to be added to your head. Stock up on spray hair colour, hairspray and spray glitter, thin floristy wire (either from a garden centre or a haberdashers) and whatever takes your fancy and give it a go.

Try recreating your own version of a Gaga look by spraying your hair up and wiring in toy telephones. You could even try going one step further than Gaga and adding a whole toy rabbit to your head, not just the ears!

Let your imagination run wild.
